      Images in Wiki articles

      Hi,

I was wondering if you have an advice on how to incorporate images into Wiki articles.
I want users to easily upload images and reference them in an article.
If a user removes their account, the image should not disappear, so the album function from vB is not sufficient. Any suggestions are welcome. As far as I know it is not possible to attach an image (and display it) to an article.

      Regards,

      Taco

For the time being this is something that will have to be accomplished using vBulletin's ATTACH BB-Code to display attachments inline. The Images functionality is an addon we plan to release in the future, but it is a bit more complicated than our other addons, and is not yet complete. It is simply a time issue. We are currently working on making the main product as stable as possible.

It is slated for release after Xpages (which is #2 in the addon release queue).

By clicking the "Manage Attachments" button on the Edit tab. There, you would upload it as a normal attachment. To display it in the article rather than in a box at the bottom like usual, you would click the paperclip icon in the editor toolbar. This should open a dropdown that allows you to select the image you just uploaded. This is standard vBulletin functionality.

This only shows a thumbnail, and not the full image ?

I'll tell you how I use images in VaultWiki. First of all, each image kind of gets its own article. Let's assume I have picture.jpg which I want to put in an article "Wiki:Article". I would type in in the address bar http://www.crackedeggstudios.com/vault/Image:picture.jpg. I would then be prompted to create this article. I type a description in the text, and use the "Manage Attachments" button to upload picture.jpg to this article.

Then, when editing "Wiki:Article", I type in the code [Image=picture.jpg|right]Description of picture[/Image]. Then, when you view your article, you will see a box containing the image on the upper right corner of the article (or whatever section of the article you are editing). There will also be a caption under the picture that says "Description of picture".

Also, remember that everything is case-sensitive. Remember this and apply it, or you will fail.
And that's how you do it. Remember that everything is case-sensitive.
"No single preposition can describe what is going on in there."

I realize now that I probably should have read NickyPhils's response sooner. The functionality he describes is not available until the addon VaultWiki Images. And that case sensitivity really only applies in this case because you are dealing with filenames.

Can I add a bump to this to beg for a release of this in the not too distant future, I can't really 'go live' with the wiki until this functionality exists on my site. Most of my editors aren't particularly tech friendly so the easier it is for them the better, and my site is very photo heavy.

I guess I can rush this out for early next week. Keep in mind this may not make using images any easier, but will make them look nicer. And every time you do add an image, you feel like you've contributed a lot to the wiki.

Also there is one outstanding bug right now that I can't remember. It's pretty obscure, but important nonetheless. If you think of it (that's the only way to find it, by thinking "what if?") once this comes out, then please report it.

I like the idea of this as I want to include images myself, so here are some suggestions for it

Have an Image size variable which we can set which will allow us to state the image size to go in our article, so if the image was 500 pixels wide and we only wanted it to be 200 we could do something like: [image=picture.jpg|right|x=200|y=250]Description of picture[/image]
Obviously if the x,y settings were left out then it would use the default image sizes.

Also, having a button on the message editor to allow us to upload an image to the image namespace, or to open a new window where we could do it and then copy the link back to our article. I've used some top content systems and having this integrated into the text editor makes things so much easier.

Just some ideas, I don't know if they are possible, but worth thinking on perhaps

All the things you suggested could be implemented, but due to time constraints the upload in the editor will not be possible in the first build, and probably not until some time around December. I will look into adding a link that will help some people do this the long way until that time.

I am trying to test out the image function but it is not working

I am using this example as posted above [.image=picture.jpg|right]Description of picture[/image].

Yes, I did upload my own picture and I replaced the picture.jpg name.

I also just noticed that the paperclip image (attachement) has disappeared in the toolbar.

This functionality is only possible using the "VaultWiki Images" addon, which has not been released yet.
