      Adding pages to categories

Our most prolific contributor to the NAWCC Wiki (which we call Encyclopedia) is having difficulty managing categories and areas. It is possible we have a misconfiguration of some kind, but I have not been able to figure out what the problem is.

My search for a prior discussion turned up this rather old reference https://www.vaultwiki.org/threads/55...light=category.

Our content structures were put together a long time ago but here is what currently appears in our Railroad Watches category.

The Watch Inspectors article is in the American Pocket Watches area.

When I navigate to the category to add the page Watch Inspectors, the page selection form has no means to show it.

Is the Wiki not configured properly? I think this is an intended use but I cannot figure out how to do it and my member is very frustrated since it has taken me over 6 months to formulate this question.

After writing the above I went back to explore the problem further. What I have found is that our Categoriy pages are almost all located in an Area called "Category". I edited the article that triggered this question and gave it a new Category called Railroad watches. That resulted in a new category page that was not in the Category Area.

There is also a category page for Railroad watches in Superior categories: Encyclopedia : Watches : Watch types by social function. The new Category Railroad watches has no Superior categories.

The difficulty that the organizational structure introduces is that it is difficult to select the category when editing an article because, I think, it needs the full path name in the Category Area to be identified. i.e. Encyclopedia : Watches : Watch types by social function.

The selection form works solely based on the target's name. With a blank search, it should show the first 200 pages that can be added. If you need to see more, you need to search or filter. The drill-down path is doesn't matter here, unless you choose a filter.

You are more likely having a permissions-related issue. In order for a page to be added to a category, the user needs various permissions. Since your screenshot already shows a category with an "Add listing" button, I'm going to assume your permissions are setup correctly on the category side of things.

But your permissions must also be setup correctly on the page side. An easy way to test is by going to the desired page's Edit tab. Does it give you a way to add categories? If not:
      - in the area the page is saved in, the user needs permission to put X in categories. Where X is the kind of page it actually is: page, book, category, etc. It would appear under the relevant permissions heading for that type.

For completeness (this doesn't seem to be your issue), if the "Add Listing" button is missing in the category, the user must be able to:
      1. view the contents of the area where that category is saved... under the "Area Permissions" heading
      2. view the list of pages added to that category (if you can't see what's in the category already, you can't add to it)... under the "Category Permissions" heading
      3. add listings to the category... under the "Category Permissions" heading
      4. the category must not be Protected against new listings... the category's Protect tab

On this side, typically #2 or #3 is what trips most people up.

As with all permissions, any of these could be customized (as No) at an area level if you set up custom area permissions. Analyzing Wiki Permissions in both the category's area and the page's area could be helpful finding a rogue "No" or "Never" in this case.

EDIT: I did some reviewing of the pages you mentioned on your site, and compared the behavior to the code. What seems to be happening is this:

      - The user has permission to view the contents of many areas.
      - But the first 200 results from those areas are page types that aren't allowed to have categories.

This makes for a mostly empty list until the user tries to drill-down by name or filter. The behavior looks strange, but appears to be working. I believe it should be possible to make the initial result set slightly more populous, by checking more flags against the area-permissions filter before it goes into the query, rather than checking most flags against the query result set.

The menu in the editor for the wiki uses the ellipsis at the upper right. I think our user was having toruble with finding that. When that dropdown is pen the ellipsis takes on another role and clicking it again opens the tool to select a category. When that is followed the category selection tool is displayed with the useful set of categories.

I think he is able to use it with the above instructions, but it would be better if it were more obvious.
