Would it be possible to move the page heading from the content to where the breadcrumb is?

There is no built-in way to do that at this time.

Is there a way to do so with changes to the templates? I know vw_node_title is where the header is, but couldn't figure out where/how it is being inserted so that I could change the location.

It's inserted in PHP currently (vault/core/view/ui/stack/vw.php, title_block). It's definitely one of the things we can improve in the future.

Using the template modification system would be the best option for flexibility.
