Invision Power Suite 4 is coming

On the topic of IPB: IPS4 is coming soon and is a total rewrite. Any development time you put into IPS compatibility now, is likely for nothing, because everything will break once IPS4 is out.

Better wait until the beta is out first.

I absolutely don't agree but that's incidental. Now VaultWiki Gamma 1 is out and still nothing to see from a IPB version. So the simple question is, is the IPB version something like nearly ready or not? If still not maybe the point of view from Alfa1
      is however the correct consideration.

      Best Regards

Yeah, IPS has been working on IPS4 for a year now. They planned to release it at the end of last month or beginning of this month. The blogs about IPS4 have been ramping up to multiple blogs a week. So it seems IPS4 beta release is imminent.
I would much like VW4 to be available for IPS4, though it seems illogical to make VW4 ready for IPS3 (which will take many months) while IPS4 is likely released well before VW4 can be ready for IPS3.

Well, we will see when IPS4 comes really out. I would really like to read some generally words from Pegasus to the future of a VaultWiki version for IPB.

Isn't it a waste of time to support IPS3 when IPS4 is imminent?
Consider that Vaultwiki 4 is not even stable for vbulletin yet.

We are eagerly awaiting the release of IPS4. But I wonder, is it worth NOT supporting IPS3. I mean, look how long vB3 stayed relevant after vB4 was out (granted, there was a significant price jump between those versions, and it seems vB5 will never be relevant). We STILL have pre-customers asking us 5 years later if vB3 is supported.

We don't have a comparable (major point) release for XenForo to compare.

Especially with IPS only being a 6 month subscription (it's likely there are more expired licenses than a 1 year subscription at the same fees), I wonder how much of the market really would upgrade so quickly. It is a breaking upgrade after all. Unlike vB 3.6 -> 3.8 or XF 1.1 -> 1.3, all add-ons and styles will break with the upgrade.

I do not think that is a valid comparison. vb4 came with significant issues and was released with thousands of bugs, of which hundreds will never be fixed. Its debatable if vb4 is a real upgrade from vb3. Many webmasters find no compelling reason to move to vb4. Therefore there has been a low adoption rate of vb4. vb5 has the same issues, but much much worse.

IPB 3.4 also broke many addons / styles. As did several 3.x releases. But as IPS offers most major addons themselves, its not a major issue. IPS4 will not just be an update. It is a rewrite. A new system. In other words supporting IPS 3 and 4 means supporting 2 different systems.

IPS normally delivers quality releases and IPS customers quickly adopt to the latest version. Just like XenForo customers do. See this overview:
      https://tools.digitalpoint.com/cookie-search
      Scroll to the bottom.
      • IPS: 89% is using the latest version. (3.4 released last year) Only 3% is running IPB3.0.
      • XF: 11% is using the latest version, as it has just been released. The previous version has 63% adoption. Experience shows that these customers will quickly move to the latest version.
      • vb: 0% is using the latest version. (5.1) 1.1% is using vb5.0 which was released 1.5 years ago.

Tick the 'show historical charts' button for a good overview of behavior in time. Its pretty clear how IPS customers quickly adopt the latest version. Exactly because of the quality and the 6 month renewal.

Based on the above you can expect that IPS customers will quickly adopt IPS4 and that within a year or so around 90% will be running that version.

I just wanted to mention, since I found it amusing... that I was searching Google looking for other discussions of IPS adoption rates to see if there might be more of an "official word" on this question, when I clicked on one of the top-ranked results and just ended up back on this page.
