discussion tab post calculation

i hate discussion tabs, since no one sees them if you dont go to a page
so i wrote a plugin that creates a separate thread in a different forum, and displays them nicely under the discussion tab when the tab is clicked.

but i would like to use that post counter for the tab: ie Discussion[5]
there for my question is:
Where is the code located that calculates the number of posts made to a discussion thread?

I might be missing the point, but I'm not sure why you would want users to discuss a page they haven't seen?

You realize that you can place the comments below the article as we do here, that way they can see both the page and the comments on the same "page"?
This is a setting in VaultWiki: Article Display Options.

True, i rather dont want that.
what i want is a button with "create discussion" when there is no discussion thread. and when pressed it has to create a thread in a forum called "wiki discussions"
BUT that requires a lot of core files and template editing.. i just dont want that since it makes upgrading VW much more difficult. (i just dont have that time to check, and edit every release)

the reason why is simple.
the "wiki discussions" forums is a legacy left over from vbWiki, when clicked on the discussion tab it created a thread in that forum.
nowadays when users come to the forums, they have "no time" to look at every single forum to see if there might be new posts. especialy the wiki has created MORE forums to watch.
people just dont use those WIKI forums.. if they want to go to the wiki, they click the WIKI tab on the main menu, or through the "Recent Wiki changes"
They dont go over every NAMSPACE to see if there are duscussion.
... i am actually considering hiding those wikiforums from the FORUMHOME since no one is using them!!

so we want a single forum that contain ALL discussions for the WIKI articles.. much cleaner and more organised and easy to browse through all the discussions.

so there for i decided to write a plugin to attach to a hook so when an article is created a discussion thread is as well.
no idealistic but it suits its purpose
I did have to edit 1 file tabs/discussion, but only added 5 lines of code.. which is maintainable
i could add the plugin code to that files, but it requires to edit that file at several places.. which is again harder to track when VW does new releases.

Problem is that if you do this you will be on your own to find a suitable upgrade path to version 4, which has a different comments system. If your comments are in a different forum, the upgrade process won't think you have comments at all.

yup i know i will be responsible for updating the plugin and everything that comes with it..
but you got a point
might put it on hold for a bit to see whats going to happen with vw4.. can always decide otherwise after
