Earlier today one of our site users stumbled upon a potential cross-site scripting vulnerability in VaultWiki 4 Alpha 3 while using our web site. It's likely the user was unaware of the significance of what they had found: the action was not malicious and conditions were not ideal to perform an exploit, but the problem was obvious to site admins. Minutes later, developers discovered a bug that under specific wiki configurations could be exploited to post arbitrary HTML on a victim's site.

The release of VaultWiki 4 Alpha 4 has been accelerated and made available today to address this issue. We highly recommend that any customers who are using an earlier Alpha of VaultWiki 4 to upgrade as soon as they are able to close this security hole. The issue does not exist in VaultWiki 3.

Please note that Alpha 4, like those before it, is only compatible with vBulletin 4.1.4 and higher.

      Changes

      In this Alpha, you'll notice:
      • Resolved XSS vulnerability
      • Forum headers are back
      • More reliable caches
      • Deleting wiki pages works properly
      • Discussion titles are fixed
      • Other minor enhancements and bug fixes

Since this is still an Alpha release, we still do not recommend installing VaultWiki 4 Alpha 4 on production sites at this time.

VaultWiki 4 Alpha 3 has now been released. Thanks to the help of users who were brave enough to become early adopters, we feel this version is really starting to come together. A significant number of showstopper issues have been identified and addressed. Alpha 3 is representative of the fruits of these endeavors.

Please note that Alpha 3, like those before it, is only compatible with vBulletin 4.1.4 and higher.

      Upgrading

For users upgrading from Alpha 1 or 2, one of the directives in vault/config.php has been changed. You will need to replace this file with the appropriate new file, or you must modify your existing config file. Find the following:
      Code:
      'DEFAULT_SCRIPT'
      and replace it with:
      Code:
      'VW_DEFAULT_SCRIPT'

      Changes

      In this Alpha, you'll notice:
      • Better stability on servers with early versions of MySQL 5
      • Better stability editing individual sections of a page
      • Better stability of all variants of the BB-Code parser
      • Better stability when deleting wiki data
      • Fixed over 20 missing graphics
      • Other minor enhancements and bug fixes

Since this is still an Alpha release, we still do not recommend installing VaultWiki 4 Alpha 3 on production sites at this time.

Graphics Developer Kit and Other Download Options

With the release of Alpha 3, we have also made significant changes to the download form in the Members area.

We have moved the Graphics Developer Kits (GDKs) for VaultWiki 3 from our VaultWiki Modifications forums and made them available via the VaultWiki download form. The GDK for VaultWiki 4 is available there as well.

When downloading VaultWiki from now on, the Javascript files in the package will be minified by default. You can use the new options to download the Uncompressed Javascript if you need it for some reason.

If you would like to speed up the download from our site and the upload to your own, you can now also opt to download the package without any image files. This option is recommended mainly for in-place replacements of your files of the same version, or if you have checked the release details and there is no mention of new images.

VaultWiki 4 Alpha 2 has now been released. We really appreciate all the feedback and reports we've received so far. We look forward to more of this, and we hope to activate even more hidden changes in Alphas to come.

Please note Alpha 2, like Alpha 1, is only compatible with vBulletin 4.1.4 and higher. We will be adding download access for other platforms as product stability increases. Until then, since stability is important across all platforms, we think it best to keep reporting and debugging of such issues as uncomplicated as possible by only providing one platform release at a time.

      In this Alpha, you'll notice:
      • New: Another Wiki URL Format
      • New: CSS StyleVars
      • Better stability of the installer/upgrader
      • Better stability on servers where the MySQLi extension is not installed
      • Better data integrity after upgrading from VaultWiki 3
      • Better stability of all variants of the BB-Code parser
      • Broken editor modes and tools are fixed
      • Better stability when deleting wiki data

Since this is still an Alpha release, we still do not recommend installing VaultWiki 4 Alpha 2 on production sites at this time.

      Note on Recent Download Unavailability

When we first attempted to release Alpha 2 nearly 24 hours ago, it caused our Members area to break. The existing server-side code that crawled our directories where VaultWiki is stored in order to deliver only the most recently updated file revisions was not designed with the sheer size of VaultWiki 4 in mind (due to MVC, multi-platform, and other design preferences, VaultWiki 4 is roughly 10 times larger than VaultWiki 3).

We spent the last 24 hours redesigning the Members area database and rewriting the code that pulls builds out of our VaultWiki Depot, and the result has allowed us to turn the Members area back on and offer VaultWiki 4 for download once again.

You may also notice that your downloads are compiled much faster than they were before.

It's finally time. After literally years of anticipation, we are pleased to announce that VaultWiki 4 is finally available for download!

We're making this Alpha version of VaultWiki 4 available now for sites interested in exploring this early version of the software, to start work on styling, plug-ins, etc, and to provide feedback before a final version is released. While this Alpha version can be used on new sites, some functionality and content of existing sites won't yet be ported over. Thus, we recommend that users who want to upgrade sites to this Alpha version do so in a staging environment before deploying it to production.

Keep in mind, however, that this release of VaultWiki 4 will only work with vBulletin version 4.1.4 and higher. We will be adding support for other versions of vBulletin and some other forum platforms before month's end.

      New Features and Improvements

As we've previously announced, VaultWiki 4 features significant improvements over version 3:
      • A completely rewritten core product which provides a modular and more customizable environment
      • More intuitive Wiki Areas and other structured components
      • A wiki sidebar featuring Live Search, Activity Feed, Similar Content, and more
      • The ability to Upload Files and add Categories via the editor
      • Have more than 1 Discussion on each wiki page
      • Improved and more accessible moderator tools
      • History for Files, so new uploads can be reverted if necessary
      • A one-click install and upgrade process
      • More URL customization options and easier server preparation for those options
      • Full IPv6 support and UTF-8 support without needing to recompile PHP
      • .. and more to be revealed in future updates

      How to Upgrade

For users who wish to upgrade their current installation of VaultWiki to this early version of VaultWiki 4, please refer to this blog post for the proper procedures: https://www.vaultwiki.org/blogs/55/

      Price and Availability

VaultWiki 4 is available to all users who have an active VaultWiki Premium License.

If you still have a VaultWiki Standard License, you have until March 31, 2013 to Upgrade to Premium via the Members area. Beyond that date we will no longer be offering the License Upgrade, and Standard License holders will have to purchase a new Premium License in order to access VaultWiki 4.

Additionally, on March 31, 2013, prices for all other products and services will be increasing, such as new licenses and renewals.

We trust you'll agree that VaultWiki 4 makes significant strides advancing the capabilities of community-driven wiki sites. We're proud of what we've been able to accomplish in VaultWiki 4, and we believe you'll be quite pleased with VaultWiki and where we plan to take it over the next few weeks and months.

As many users have already noticed, we spent a significant part of the past two weeks upgrading the version of VaultWiki installed on our own site to VaultWiki version 4. It took quite a while due to the somewhat unorthodox setup we have, and due to the modifications we use internally.

Nevertheless, the web site is now running VaultWiki 4, and the wiki is turned on for all to see, test, and demo. Keep in mind that currently only VaultWiki 3 is available for sale, so what you now see on this site is only a preview of what's to come very, very soon. It is not completely representative of the product you can download today.

If you were going to purchase VaultWiki 3 now anyway, and now you're afraid you'll have to pay for VaultWiki 4 again in a very short time, don't be. You don't have to wait for VaultWiki 4. Like other updates, the upgrade to version 4 will be included in the purchase price of version 3.

This weekend we discovered a possible security issue in all versions of the VaultWiki 3 series, in which under certain conditions, a malicious user might be able to execute arbitrary code against the web server.

VaultWiki 3.0.20 fixes this issue as well as a number of other minor issues.

ALL versions of VaultWiki Premium prior to 3.0.20 are vulnerable, including VaultWiki Lite. If you currently have VaultWiki installed we urge you to upgrade IMMEDIATELY to protect your site.

For users who have expired licenses, Patch Level releases are available for versions released in the past year:

      - 3.0.19 Patch Level 1
      - 3.0.18 Patch Level 1
      - 3.0.17 Patch Level 1

For Patch Level variations of this release, simply upload the files over your current installation to apply the fix.

Customers with a valid license can download the patch through our Members Area: https://www.vaultwiki.org/members/

On October 29, 2012, our company headquarters received some significant flood damage at the hands of Hurricane Sandy. While in comparison to some other businesses and homes in the New York area (and our hearts go out to them and their families) we might consider ourselves somewhat lucky, the fact remains that there has been damage to basic utilities and the standing structure that has needed and still requires continued attention before the workplace can be deemed a safe and healthy environment again.

Development halted on October 28 and has not resumed since. We do not anticipate developers being able to get back to work until late this coming week or the following week. Customer service and technical support may be significantly delayed during this period. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause or have caused, and we appreciate your continued understanding during this difficult time.

      Thank you.
