Here are the steps I follow testing out a new release for upgrade and import from VW3 to VW4:
  1. If installed: Uninstall VW4
  2. If installed: Remove all VW4 directories in the Vault directory, including the install dir.
  3. Enable: Options > VaultWiki: Legacy Options > Support Legacy Syntax = NuWiki
  4. Disable VW3
  5. edit config and import file
  6. Upload the files of the new build.
  7. If you use Xcache, restart PHP to clear it. Make sure the cache prefix in vBulletin's config file is unique.
  8. Install here: /vault/install/index.php
  9. Check vBulletin's BB-Code Manager and make sure the wiki BB-Codes still have the same names you've been using. If they don't, rename them. Make sure that all the wiki BB-Codes have a "Unique Tag Key" under "Wiki-Related Options". If they don't, something went wrong already and you will need to report the broken BB-Codes.
  10. If you have Debug Mode on, go to Settings > VaultWiki: Untouchable Settings > ID of the System Area. Make sure this has a number filled in. If it's blank, get the ID for "System" from the Area Manager (it will be in the heading when you Edit it), and fill it in.
  11. Import.
  12. In navigation set Area Contents Per Page to same number as Number of Previewed Area Contents.
  13. Open large popular wiki and check:
    - bb codes
    - editor icons
  14. Change table bbcode
  15. Set wiki bbcodes to wiki code group in bb code manager
  16. Only for final import: Delete bb codes: book, redirect
  17. set permissions
  18. check redirects and special pages
  19. check comments
  20. check main page
  21. configure sidebar blocks
  22. check styling
  23. Report all bugs
  24. Wait for new build
  25. Go to 1
