Since yesterday, VaultWiki 3.0.0 RC 1 has been available. With RC 1, we have achieved a certain level confidence in the product's functionality and stability, even though we still have a few more features in store before calling it a "Gold" release.

      New Tabs

In Release Candidate 1, which included mainly style and usability changes, we added two new tabs to wiki pages: the Source tab and the Apply tab.

The Source tab appears to users who cannot edit a page because they either don't have permission, or the page is not accepting new changes for another reason. The tab will show the user the source code that was used to generate the tab, without allowing the user to make any changes to it.

The Apply tab allows users to make certain page configuration changes, like adding a page to a Social Group, choosing the forum a header appears in, or making pages into translations of other pages.
With the addition of the Apply tab, the Translate tab has been completely removed from the Premium package.

      Easier Upgrades

In the past, forum administrators upgrading VaultWiki were relatively in the dark about any new features unless they read the announcement or paid close attention in other parts of the forum.

From now on, new features and other important changes will be outlined in a notice posted to the AdminCP Home Page after performing the upgrade, along with brief instructions on any action that should be taken. This notice will remain visible until the admin actively dismisses it.

Now, instead of adding a new unique permission every time a Special Page is added, there is a small set of permissions that controls certain "types" of Special pages. This makes the admin's job much easier, because when editing a Usergroup, you no longer have 25 toggles for each Special page (if you had the Premium package). Now, you have about 7 or 8.

However, this change also means that you probably have to edit your Usergroups after this upgrade to make sure everything is how you want it.

      VaultWiki Lite

After 18 months, a new version of VaultWiki Lite has been posted for free on vbulletin.org. This version can be downloaded by anyone who wishes to use a very basic form of VaultWiki, or who want to try it out before purchasing.

The Lite version has a very limited feature set, but unlike our last free release, 3.0.0 Lite is fully supported on our site. We hope that having based this iteration on a more stable, mature product will contribute to making both it and VaultWiki itself a success this time around.

This weekend we're releasing a roll-up update including many of the important changes made to Beta 5 in the past week. There are no new features in this release, as the main focus has been stability.

Earlier in the week we discovered a number of places in VaultWiki where fatal or database errors would be encountered under relatively common circumstances. We also discovered what could be a major issue in versions dating back to 2.5.0. ...

The new VaultWiki release, 3.0.0 Beta 5, is finally here. It's been long overdue, almost 3 weeks since the previous beta release, and with the availability of vBulletin 4.0.2, we thought we might have to rush out yet another beta.

However, the number of problems caused by vBulletin 4.0.2 forced us to keep it in QA for a while - and gave us the time we needed to roll out some much-anticipated changes.

      Multi-Language Support

VaultWiki 3 Beta 5 is the first public build to support writing wiki pages in more than one language. Requested since very early in VaultWiki's development, Multi-Language support is something we have wanted to add for a long time but it required so many data management changes that it just seemed to get delayed further and further. ...

To finish the week off, we've released VaultWiki 3.0.0 Beta 4. While we did not have a beta scheduled for this week, the combination of recently sponsored features and some beta-quality bugs have necessitated it. To our surprise, quite a lot made it into this iteration.

      Social Group Pages

If your community has active social groups, you can allow a social group to create group-centric wiki pages. Only the group's members can edit the pages, and if they choose, a page can be made completely private so that non-members can't even read it. ...

On our old site we had a pretty standard Donations system, where customers could show their gratitude and encourage further development by donating simply to "VaultWiki Development."

With the new site, we thought we'd add another level of dynamic to the Donations page - by launching a new program we call "Sponsor a Feature." As time progresses, we select several feature requests from the forums that we believe will result in significant improvements to the core product, but which will require significant changes and development time.

The selected requests are listed in the Donations page and "compete" with each other for the most donations. This helps us understand which features the community really, really wants and helps us prioritize their development.

Visit the donations page, by clicking the link under the Members tab. Check out what's in the works, and don’t hesitate to sponsor the feature that you most want to see implemented. ...

VaultWiki 3.0.0 Beta 3, released today, fixes many showstopper bugs in the previous betas and is the first release to point to the new web site for version-checking and copyright information. There are also some notable additions in this release which deserve some attention.

      Improved Wiki Home

The wiki home page previously showed the wiki logo and a search box. In vBulletin 4, it was accessible by clicking the Wiki tab, but in vBulletin 3, it wasn't really accessible at all. vBulletin 3 now has a link in its drop-down menu to the wiki home page, and the page now lists the visible namespaces along with the total number of pages and comments in each one.

      Easier .htaccess Setup

Because of the many possible .htaccess configurations possible using VaultWiki's settings, it has been almost impossible to write a definitive tutorial on what Mod-Rewrite rules to use for a wiki. One of the tools under "Initial Wiki Setup" section in the AdminCP is the Mod-Rewrite Generator, which parses your current wiki settings and outputs the rules you need to get it up and running.

After 18 months of sharing a site with Cracked Egg Studios, we're happy to announce that the VaultWiki Team has been granted its own web site. VaultWiki.org is a site completely dedicated to licensing and support for our vBulletin product VaultWiki, and for our community of license holders to discuss and share their creations using the software.

Because the database was imported directly from our old location, everyone's posts, user names, passwords, should remain the same. While we officially launched yesterday, there are still a few content pages that need to be updated to better suit the focus of the site, and likely a few bugs that need to be worked out. We're very pleased with what we have so far, and we're sure you will be too. We have many exciting changes planned for the next few weeks that we can't wait to share with you.

Please note that the VaultWiki License Agreement has been updated to reflect this change and is effective for any downloads from now on. ...
