Three (related) editing suggestions: collapsed Additional Options section with more settings, Suggested categories & Heading overlay

I have just a few (ok.. three ) suggestions that I think would improve the wiki editing experience for casual users. A consistent editor between forum and wiki has made quite an improvement over MediaWiki at making adding/editing the wiki less daunting to casual users but I think this could go further with the following three suggestions:

      1 Additional Options section, collapsed
Move the following two editing settings to the Additional Options section (between the current edit section and the watched notification section):
      • Treat this page as a:
      • Main Icon Image:

The Additional options section should be collapsible and collapsed by default (or provide a default admin option) to save on screen real estate and make the editing less daunting. I'm finding more often than not the book/template options aren't relevant for the kind of pages being edited/created and categories can be created via the "new category" button further up on the edit page.

      2 Suggested categories
This would be a series of 3-5 existing categories determined by the words contained in the wiki page. Appearance wise I think something along the lines of Xenforo's thread tags would be best, rather than a list. Clicking one or more of the suggestions would add the category to the "Selected Categories" section.

      3 Heading bbcode
UPDATE: I have suggested a better approach for this inspired by XenForo 2's Froala editor: https://www.vaultwiki.org/threads/6084/#post17150

Or perhaps a heading level drop down menu would be appropriate?
      Attachment 1620

      Original suggestion:
Clicking the "H" button displays a prompt saying "Please enter the option for this tag". Can this phrase be altered to something more meaningful like "Please enter the depth required for the heading. The default depth is 2."

If at all possible I feel using an Xenforo overlay with a number field would be better suited, with the built-in browser +/- buttons and possibility of setting 2 as the default and minimum value, and 6 as the maximum value (since Special WikiCodeList states 6 is the maximum). Currently it is possible enter a non-number value like abc into the prompt which doesn't make any sense.

I think implementing all three of these suggestions would be awesome although I have listed them in the order of importance that I perceive.

I've put together a visual representation of how 1 and 2 might look (with Xenforo FlatAwesome as a base)

The attachments don't seem to be loading at moment so I've uploaded the images elsewhere and have included them below.

      suggestion 1 & 2:

      suggestion 3:

EDIT: Perhaps suggestion 2 is more of a major feature (priority 8), as it could be quite involved if going along the path of ignoring 'common' words (e.g. the, is, it .... and a whole heap more) and possibly giving words inside headings more weighting than the rest of the page. It depends on how you'd prefer to implement the idea really . Suggestion 1 could be an expansion of Additional Options rather than a whole new section, but please allow it to be collapsed.

Thanks for the mockups. I am not sure yet how I feel about the Additional Options change, as hiding the subscription options could be a problem, and I know some users who might not appreciate the repositioning of the icon controls. We do have a new concept of Page Settings coming soon, and I wonder if some options might do better moved to a heading like that. I will try to keep these controls in mind as we work on that.

The Suggested Categories option seems nice, and your mockup shows a clean way that it could be accomplished. You are correct that it could potentially be quite involved, but we do need an engine like this for some other features that have been suggested.

The suggestion for the H BB-Code has been really needed for a while, mainly for the validation and clearer language as you've noted (a lot of people try to put the header text in that field!), but there are also lesser known options for the BB-Code that could see more use if they are actually offered to the user.

Thanks for the reply and consideration of the suggestions.

Regarding the Additional Options, yes I agree about the subscriptions(watched) options ... they would be best left in their own section the same as now, i.e. "Watched Wiki Content Options" on XenForo & after the settings (including additional options when shown e.g. auto parsing URLs).

Perhaps it is just due to me recently moving to VaultWiki but I've had a few users (whom have seldom edited the wiki) try and insert image attachments into a wiki page using the main (page) icon image setting, one user ask whether their page should be a template, book or category (not realising selecting none is also valid) and a couple of others tell me generally they don't feel comfortable editing the wiki. So I feel the amount of options seem to be confusing them even though VaultWiki overall is a much needed step up from the entirely different MediaWiki system and my contributor count is on the rise.

Maybe in order to appease the most customers, admins could choose what they want to move into Additional options with additional admin settings? Although in saying this it does sound like this could introduce a bit of a maintenance headache for you e.g. keeping tab orders correct and other issues.

I am now curious about the new page settings idea, is this something planned for 4.0.x or later in 4.1/4.2?

      Thanks!

For 3) Headline bbcode improvements, I've been experimenting with a working toolbar example from this idea:
      Attachment 1625

It took around 50 lines of javascript to end up with something that works (at least as a concept. However it is XF2.x only, since it listens for Froala specific events and sends Froala specific commands. Edits to existing headlines would require manual editing (e.g. changing depth from 3 to 2), the same as now and also how [spoiler] editing works.

      Short video demo: https://imgur.com/a/hZiG6sq

      Or screenshot:

I think this approach would simplify the usage of the [H] Headline BBcode. Other approaches might be a XenForo overlay with depth + title fields, or Froala popup (the same as [IMG] & [URL]). But to be honest an overlay or popup sounds more complicated.

With the visual differences of H=1 vs 2-6, if a headline bbcode dropdown feature was added similar to my above post, perhaps the dropdown text for H1 would be better if it said something like "Section". That or skip H=1 in the dropdown altogether.

I can't speak for other admins and their site's use case, but for me the level 1 headline (new section) would probably be used infrequently. I can imagine a couple cases where additional page sections with H=1 might be useful. On the other hand, I can also picture casual/new wiki editors inadvertently choosing H=1 when they really intended for a standard headline (H=2).

      Any thoughts on this?
