Yes, I understand. That was 6 years ago before XenForo existed and vb4 was in alpha.
Maybe its time to update it to use alerts like xenforo, IPB, WBB, vb5.

Please implement this so that it uses standard XF behavior. it makes no sense to send conversations in xenforo.

Bumping this feature request for possible inclusion in VW 4.1. A generic moderator alert sounds more appropriate in XenForo 2.x. I suggest leaving the existing PM functionality as-is, but modify the admin setting so that the admin can choose how to deliver these messages.

vw_approve_pm: Notify contributors when their edits are moderated
O Conversation message (Existing functionality)
O Alert (Potential for push notifications in XF2.1?)
O Do not notify

The alert message could be something like:
Your edit to the [Page type] [Page title] has been approved.
E.g. Your edit to the Page Testing playground for XF2 has been approved.
and
The [Page type] [Page title] that you created has been approved.
E.g. The Page Testing playground for XF2 that you created has been approved.

Implemented in the next release. The updated design mostly follows ACL's post above.
The new default value for the setting on XenForo is Alert, but if you had VaultWiki installed already, you will need to change it manually.
