In forum integration, jumping to a particular post does not work well with collapsed wiki page

In vBulletin, you can jump to a particular post in a thread in any number of ways (today's post, most recent unread post, specific post number, etc). When wiki integration is enabled and that thread has a long wiki page with auto-collapse enabled, then that jump can get you to the wrong post because the jump does not account for the auto-collapse of the wiki page. For example, if a thread has 19 posts, 9 on the second page, and you jump to the 12th post, it might actually jump you to the 19th post as the wiki page collapses and pulls/scrolls the page up. You could argue that this may really be a browser problem, but it worsens the user experience.

The most reasonable solution to this is for the wiki page to open collapsed from the beginning if auto-collapse is enabled so that dynamic resizing doesn't occur. Then the jump will go to the right post. But I don't know if there is a technical limitation preventing this.

The other option is for the wiki page to offer a global or per-forum config option to disable auto-collapse if the request URL contains a jump to a particular post. Then VW can disable the collapse for that page and the jump will go to the correct post at the expense of the full wiki page loading - a fair trade off.

I was only able to reproduce this issue in Firefox, but it might be possible in other browsers on slower web servers than ours. Without knowing the internals of the browsers' rendering engines and the order certain tasks are completed, I must assume it relies on a race condition.

This issue is fixed in the next release. The auto-collapse should no longer take place if the browser is already scrolled below the top of the collapsing element when the collapse is calculated.

Auto-collapse is not performed on the server side because the server does not know if the browser has Javascript enabled or if the web site will contain other Javascript errors. If Javascript is disabled or if there is an error, then the reader would not be able to expand/read the collapsed element. Since graceful degradation in the absence of working Javascript is not possible here, we use progressive enhancement for this feature.
