Issue: Turn numbered brackets into references

In VW3 the references code has been buggy. This caused users to use manual reference styles. My users have used the following a lot:

statement[1] and another statement[2]

References

[1] a link to back up the statement
[2] a link to back up the statement

Sometimes even like this:

References

[reflist][/reflist]
[1] a link to back up the statement
[2] a link to back up the statement

It would be very nice if there would be a way to turn all this into usable reference lists.
