Configuration error involving dirs.core with PHP < 5.3.2

If the PHP version is below 5.3.2, the behavior of the realpath() function is inconsistent or it fails randomly. Even though versions below 5.3.0 are not supported, the user should still be able to get to the installer error that tells them to upgrade PHP, without encountering any PHP error or configuration issue.
