slight article name changes break old URLs?

Just looking for some clarification really.

On my site with normal forums, showthread.php looks for a thread number. So say I have a URL for a thread, e.g., (home URL)/showthread.php/8886-My-First-Drive-Review. If the thread name gets changed from "My First Drive Review" to "First-Drive-Reviews", the new URL would be (home URL)/showthread.php/8886-First-Drive-Reviews, but the old URL still works since the thread number is the same. However, it seems like with showwiki.php, minor changes in the thread name totally break previous URLs. It that right? If so what was the reason for designing it that way?

Normal users are more likely to remember the name of their favorite thread, rather than the number of their favorite thread. For this and other reasons involving content discovery and ranking based on context, it's beneficial to eliminate contextually irrelevant information, like the thread ID, from the URL.

VaultWiki has a mechanism to handle cases where the URL might change. If a change occurs, a copy of the article (called a Redirect) is left at the old URL, while the article's name is changed and given the appropriate new URL. We avoid the multiple URL problem for SEO by always forwarding search engines to the newest URL, and making the new URL canonical.
