Hide sidebar function is annoyingly unsubtle

The hide sidebar function is not subtle. It flashes across the screen when the cursor hovers over the long area it is placed. The function is has a height of more than half my monitor resolution, while I have a massive screen. For smaller monitors it may be all over their screen.
Please make this more subtle, by using more opacity and less space.

Added a delay to it. Using less space would take away from its functionality - the ability to close the sidebar without having to scroll back to a button. So it is persistent along the height of the sidebar.

Note, the delay doesn't work in IE. Not sure it's worth loading a huge Javascript library for that effect in good old IE.
