Problem with edit tab in IE8

Prolific writer has xp/ie8 system and gets blank edit window when clicking on the edit tab.

This is not a problem with IE9 or with some deployments of IE8, but our most prolific writer is stuck because of the problem. Using xp/ie8 user gets blank edit window when clicking on the edit tab.

In Googling I found that IE8 had Javascript conflicts if application/javascript was used instead of text/javascript. I have no idea what might be causing the problem and I cannot duplicate it myself.
