Option to Create More Sophisticated BBCodes through an Advanced BBCode Manager

      From this feature suggestion: http://www.vaultwiki.org/issues/1348/

There are a number of little additional features that they have (MediaWiki), such as a random selection of articles based on set criteria (I think it's a list within an article), a category list showing an expandable tree from the parent categories, etc. Could options like this be designed in some way within a sort of 'advanced' BBCode manager? Such a BBCode manager would need to be able to benefit from the template system, and be able to process data much as the parser extensions do atm.

While I like this idea in theory, this strikes me as a massive hack/add-on project in and of itself since it would be designing a bbcode that can recursively call a parser, and would blow open the entire forum/site to possible security issues. Maybe this is a project outside of the scope of VaultWiki?

I'm inclined to agree. Myself, I can't think of many 'advanced' options that would fit within the scope of VaultWiki besides what's already available in the Wiki Code Manager. To me, the 'Advanced' BB-Codes you have suggested are very similar to CMS widgets, and should perhaps be left to the community to develop.

That said, the Parser Extensions probably need to be a little more extensible for custom VARs to work, but at the moment I believe it's already possible to have hard-coded templates with PHP handlers (look for hook vault_bbcode_template in vault/special_class_bbcode.php).

A mod that does this probably needs to add a record to the vault_protect table to make sure the user doesn't try to create a page with the PHP-template's name.

I thought I might get this response... I thought it was a big ask when I first came up with the idea (but thought it worth asking nonetheless). I've not seen many developers who get the whole system as well as you do...

I really need to start getting my head into looking at what I can do with coding... but it's such a steep learning curve...

I'll find time sometime... I hope...

I was mistaken. Custom vars already work if a function in the format handle_extension_varname is defined.
