Thank you for the, as always, superb mockups. Personally, I like the way B looks, although I am not yet sure how it would be made to work for images. However, the problem with providing a direct download link and with also showing the file info, is no longer one of performance (that issue was resolved somewhere around 4.0.6), but that the link is located in text that is cached, generally for all users; whereas viewing the file info and/or downloading the file is permissions-defined, and permissions vary from user to user. Because of this, the information would most likely have to be AJAX-loaded in some way, which option C is more friendly towards. In that way, for images, option C could take the form of a much-needed lightbox having these info/links to resolve that question of how to handle them.
