"Add to Book"->Reassign Chapter = Crash

Trying to move a Chapter from one Book to another results in a hard crash

Go to a Page that is a Chapter of a Book.
Options->Add To Book
Click the "-" on the present book.
Click the "+" on another book.
Click update.
Get this fatal error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method vw_DB_MySQL_Model_vB3::var() in /home/intpcomp/public_html/forums/vault/core/controller/dm/item/chapter/vw.php on line 224

Note: interestingly, if you first update after clicking "-", then go back and "+" another book, it works fine. The error seems to be when doing the re-assignment all within the same "Update" round-trip.

Edit: if it makes any difference, in my case the target book is a child-book of the source book.

In vault/core/controller/dm/item/chapter/vw.php, find:
