Increasing user engagement and task coordination is an frequently encountered issue with wiki communities.
How do potential contributors what wikis they can start up or what tasks they can take up?
How can contributors be rewarded / stimulated to contribute?
Wiki Tasks allow members to put forward tasks that needs to be completed and the reward that users will get for this.
What are tasks?
Tasks are simply a way for the moderators and staff of Screened to highlight pages that need help in the wiki portion of the site. Sometimes this means correcting the grammar or objectivity of an article but other times we just need a way to call out pages that are weirdly empty or need to be updated post-release. As a means of encouraging our members to take on these tasks the moderators can assign extra bounty points (in addition to your normal wiki scoring) to each individual task. Once a moderator closes a task you earn the bounty and more importantly screened is now a better place.
How the system works:
A moderator or staff member creates a task and assigns a bounty to its completion.
One or more members decide to take on the task and it is marked as "in progress".
After the requested changes have been made, one of those users closes the task, leaving a comment if they worked on it in concert with another.
The moderator, seeing the changes can either close the task, or re-open it if changes still need to be made.
When closing the task, the moderator assigns the bounty to all members who deserve points based on their discretion.
The Wiskeymedia network get 1 million wiki edits per year.
I think a similar system would greatly enhance Vaulwiki. Instead of bounty points, reputation points can be used.
It would greatly increase wiki writing activity. The system has been proven to work.
This would definitely engage more users activity on the wiki! This is from the screened.com FAQs :
What are points, how do I earn them?
Points are awarded to users who submit quality content to the site. Each time any of your submissions are approved, you gain points. Accumulate enough points over time and you gain access to various abilities on the site, listed below:
under 1000 points
All submissions are sent to moderation
1000 points
You can make live edits to existing pages without need of moderation
Can request for new pages to be created, but those pages must still be moderated.
5000 points
Can create new pages without need of moderation
Can set the default image for a page (look for the ribbon icon)
Can remove images from an object
These reputation points could be used to give wiki contributers more permissions to the wiki - they deserve it!
I'm going to start on this. I think the rewards part should be generic, so we can set what rewards system should be used, and have plugins for different things like reputation, trophies, wiki rewards, vbcredits, or other systems.
