Users without permission to view Wiki images see big red crosses and 'this resource was not found'.

If a user does not have permission to view an image, then the image should be invisible. Or maybe some other result.
What should not happen is is a big red cross for each image with the message 'this resource was not found'.
Please check the wiki article I sent by PM. As you see there are 17 big red crosses with the aforementioned message on hover. It also erreronously displays a 'click to enlarge' function. When the user clicks this then the page goes awry, as it will then show seemingly random placed image loading boxes on the page which off course keep loading images that cant be loaded.

This is not just an issue for user experience, but displaying dead link images with irrelevant messages and malfunctioning image enlargers is also bad for SEO.
Google reports a CLS issue on such pages.

My request to fix this is as follows: If the user has no permission to view images then hide the complete row / div.
Asides from this, it seems to me that there are several issues at play here.

It illustrates why I try to prevent the use of the wiki attachment system as much as possible.

Note that Chrome and other browsers don't hide regular (non-wiki) broken images, but show a broken-image icon (certain ones being a red X). This is the behavior that the wiki attachment red-X was modeled after, with the added feature of reducing CLS when broken images occur.

It looks like you already found the setting intended to do what you want: Settings > Wiki: Aesthetics > Lazy load wiki attachment images = Yes, using browser-default size before loading and on errors, with a throttle.

This setting tends to increase CLS, because the image sizes become zero, or at least significantly differ from the target image size, once they fail to load. Again, the option that prevents CLS, is the one with the red Xs.

I will leave this report open because, under the throttled-mode, it is more desirable for the containing frame/border to also disappear when an image fails to load, so that should be fixed (however, it will further increase CLS).

Ideally, you would not use restricted images in public-facing wiki pages (unless you intend to tease the user to register -- in which case, the red-X version is usually desirable, but of course you should change the CSS and text to better meet your call to action).

      "Fixed" in the next release.

If lazy-loading is disabled or set to browser-default sizing mode, and the image fails to load, the image container will be hidden upon failure. This increases CLS.
