Citations lack citation microdata

It seems to me that references / citations do not have the appropriate citation microdata. i.e. itemprop="citation"
Please look into this. This seems important to me, because Google sees well referenced content as a ranking factor. It seems to me that Google may not be recognizing all our references well enough.
