Some attachments not imported as assets

Wiki articles often reuse the same Images. For example we have an image for stub articles.
This image was a vbulletin attachment attached to a wiki article.
After import, the image does not display in the wiki. The url is still a vbulletin attachment.

The implication of this is that in order to keep our wiki functional we need to keep the old VW3 forums available. Which should not be.
We need to be able to delete these forums with all their attachments without loosing wiki content.

The best solution I see for this is to write a script to pull in any images that are within img code and add these to the wiki. All importers that I have to import forum content to article systems like AMS, UBS, etc do the same.

See bug report 301106 on my live site.

Since we are talking about attachments that were on wiki articles, the easiest solution would be for the importer to create 301 redirects for imported attachments so that the old attachment IDs point to the new wiki attachments.

As a related aside, VaultWiki importers need a preserve IDs setting for most data. This is especially important for Anonymous Pages and personal Feeds imported from VW4 into another copy of VW4.

On VW3 users could user images from anywhere on vbulletin. No matter if it was from the same wiki article, another wiki article, another vbulletin post attachment, a vbulletin album, or even a vbulletin group or blog image.
When importing those images wiki article, this involves:
      - vb attachments on the same article
      - vb attachments on a different article
      - vb attachments outside of vaultwiki forums, inside vb forums
      - vb attachments outside vaultwiki forums, outside vb forums

Optimally the importer should catch all these and import those into VW4 so that the images are preserved for the wiki.

All the other forms of vB attachments would still be accessible when the VW3 forums were removed. There is no need to handle them if IDs were preserved.

Marked as "fixed" in the next release, although this is more of a new feature of the importer. In the next release, attachments on VW3 articles and attachments on comments in VW3 articles will have their IDs mapped to the corresponding VW4 attachment. If forum attachment goes missing later (such as by deleting the old wiki forums), then internal redirects will be performed to the VW4 attachment when the original ID is requested.

Many of our vb3 wiki images are embedded vb album images. it would be extremely useful if these would be pulled into the wiki.

We don't have an importer for vB albums yet, although one is planned. I suspect you already imported your vB albums into XMG, though. If you have redirects already for that, I don't think you need to worry about it.

The problem with it is that there is no way of knowing an image is in use. We gathered a large number of images including a lot of useless images, duplicates, low quality, inappropriate, etc. In XFMG all images are displayed, so there is a need to prune the gallery for bad images. Which is what we have been doing.

Why not make it much more simple: just fetch all embedded images and add those to the wiki? I do this in all importers I had created for me. It should not be a lot of work to add to the importer.
