Footnotes do not work after import

The footnote number show in the article, but not under the article. So they do not link anywhere.

Is REFLIST used in the article (as was required in VW3)? Whether REFLIST is used or not, then hovering over the footnote number will show the footnote information in a popup (new in VW4).

I see that there is an inconsistency with the behavior of the popup when the footnotes are named (such as FOOTNOTE=a), when a reflist is used vs not used. The expectation is that the popups will function regardless of the presence of reflist.

However, it would help if you clarify the way you are using footnotes.

Here is the XF demo with REFLIST: https://www.vaultwiki.org/xf-wiki/in...t-with-Reflist
      And without REFLIST: https://www.vaultwiki.org/xf-wiki/in...est-No-Reflist

      The article has no reflist.
Just like in the demo the footnotes link to a non-existing anchor.
Is there any point in having footnotes, but no list of footnotes at the bottom of the article?

That is a design question for the editors of the article. FOOTNOTE and REFLIST were generally used in pairs in VW3, but footnotes were almost pointless in VW3 if there was no reflist.

In VW4 the footnotes will now work without a reflist, as I said, you will get the new hover behavior only.

There is a bug here (inconsistency with the behavior of the popup when the footnotes are named), but I do not think it is the one you reported.

If you are trying to decide where to put the reflist in your article, it was common to put it at the end, such as:
      Code:
      [h=3]References[/h]
      [REFLIST][/REFLIST]
Since VW4 now has a sidebar, you might prefer the sidebar instead:
      Code:
      [div] position="sidebar" | [h=3]References[/h]
      [REFLIST][/REFLIST][/div]

Would it not be a good idea to always show the references if there are footnotes in the article?
Or to have an admincp setting for this.

I agree with you on always showing references, but only in Print Mode. Otherwise, I think it should be up to the admin whether the popups are enough or if a References heading should be forcibly added at the end of the content.

As of this posting, the inconsistency involving named footnotes has been fixed in the next release.

Yes, I to think it should be up to the admin. Could you please add a setting for the admin, to force a reference heading at the end of the article?

Also: I dont think that footnotes should link to non-existing page markers, which happens if there are footnotes, but no reflist.
If there is no link target then there should be no link. Otherwise its a dead link which is bad for SEO.

Marked as Fixed in the next release: Footnotes without Reflist now automatically display the References section while in Printable view.

The following feature has been implemented in the next release: A new option on the FOOTNOTE BB-Code "Always show Reference List inline", which applies the printable-footnote behavior even in non-printable mode. The default is disabled (to match the previous behavior).

The following behavior has been changed: Footnotes without Reflist no longer render as links (unless the above is true); the footnote tooltips still function per the previous behavior. This was not treated as a bug because broken fragments do not leak SEO, at least not on Google; broken hashbangs do.
