      Conditional template texts, forms, cats

As you know we use templates to quickly generate standardized articles. Users just add the template, fill in the varname and most of the article basics are there.
I would really like to see this to be taken further.

The weakness of this approach is that it leads to paragraphs with empty templates. There should be a way for paragraphs to only appear after they have been filled. A conditional template text. For example show a function to the editor to make the relevant part of the template visible.

It would be very beneficial if there would be custom fields that can be setup, so that the editor has to answer a number of questions. The answers to those questions are then represented in the template.
I would also like to see function where editors are asked to fill in the appropriate XFMG, XFRM category so that content from that will display.

As far as I can tell, it has been possible to create conditional template texts in VaultWiki since day 1. I found a bug affecting it from 2.0.0 RC 3: https://www.vaultwiki.org/issues/95/

What you are looking for is the IF BB-Code, which is documented in Special:WikiCodeList, under the Template-only BB-Codes section: https://www.vaultwiki.org/pages/Special:WikiCodeList#if

When templates are upgraded to be friendlier, it's likely that changes will also be made to make this BB-Code more accessible too.

As for XFMG, XFRM category lists, that's really a different issue entirely, as it's not related to templates or conditional features of templates, but rather something similar to SHOWTHREADS or FORUMINDEX (which now uses the WIDGET BB-Code). This should be handled as a separate request.

The reason I included the requests for XFMG , XFRM is that it should be possible to create a template which asks for the related node. Because some articles will not have related XFRM/XFMG content.
