      Special characters are badly encoded
Special characters are not encoded as they should in DB

      Hello,

I'm a new user of VaultWiki and I need a little help for something I can't solve on my side ;-)

Indeed I've started playing with it and I've noticed that special characters are not well encoded when stored in DB.
As I'm French, we are using some special characters such as é, à, ô, etc. and they are not well encoded when stored in DB.
As an example, é becomes é ... see below screen-capture.

Here below, see a screen-capture of DB, and you can see in summary field that this strange character also appears. SO there is a problem of encoding.

Now my VB4.2.1 is using French language with charset ISO-8859-1.
I've got no problem of encoding on the VB side, just on VaultWiki.

I've also added a screen-capture of the Index of Wiki where you can see another strange character.

As it is I can't do anything with VaultWiki, so could it be possible to have a look to this issue so that my users can start using the Wiki. THis step is really important for my website, and VaultWiki is what I need, so please any help could be much appreciated ;-)

      Greetings

By any chance, did you change VW_CHARSET in the vault/config.php file? This must be set to UTF-8 or it won't match the encoding of the database tables that were created.

If you changed this setting before creating those wiki pages, you might have to reenter the offending characters in order for it to go away. Or it might go away on its own after changing the setting. Character encoding issues can be strange sometimes.

      Sorry I was in vacations.

      Thank you for answering.

Yes I've tried this, and if I do so, the content of Wiki is OK but not VBulletin and also the Wiki buttons.

      I've added 2 new screenshots ;-)

It seems there is an incompatibility of the charsets between the 2.

Not much can be done about the incompatibility for now, but leave the config setting at UTF-8 and I will see if it can be fixed. If you can link me to the language file you use for your forum, that would be helpful.

      Thank you.

      I'm using French language.

If you can link me to the language file you use for your forum, that would be helpful.
Where can I found that for you?

This should be fixed in the next release, provided your PHP install has mbstring compiled and enabled. It also would require that your VaultWiki phrases are installed with the same charset as your forum language, or the VaultWiki phrases would get messed up instead (VaultWiki ships with a UTF-8 language file, and vBulletin doesn't store charset data on a per-phrase basis).

In the future we will have an on-site language exporter so that users can choose the language and charset they need. Right now we have other items to finish from our backlog.

Fixing non-wiki content that appears on wiki pages as well as wiki content that appears on non-wiki pages required a new method on the string model, which must now be applied to all string data that the wiki uses to generate content. Much of this conversion has been done as part of this fix, but there's likely plenty of use cases that have been overlooked. We invite you or other users to open separate reports for each encountered case of encoding problems starting with Beta 5.

Thank you Pegasus for taking this issue into consideration.

I'll wait for this beta 5 and from this version, I'll do the change of charset and string translation.
mbstring is enabled on my server.

      Thanks
